Integration of Multiple Cues in Shape from Texture∗

چکیده
Texture has been investigated as a cue for reconstructing 3-D structure. There are various textures in a natural scene. In this paper, the regularity of alignment of texture elements was manipulated to investigate its effect on human perception. The results show that the regularity affects human perception when only the texel density gradient is given as cue or the density cue is inconsistent with the compression cue. We introduce a model based on a MAP estimation to account for the result from a viewpoint of an integration of 3-D cues. The model simultaneously estimates texture properties and 3-D surface orientation by using prior knowledge about texture and 3-D surface. The performance of the model accounts for the experimental result well. key words: human vision, texture, 3-D shape, integration of 3-D cues

The perception of scale-dependent and scale-independent surface structure from binocular disparity, texture, and shading.
The integration of binocular disparity, shading, and texture was measured for two different aspects of three-dimensional structure: (1) shape index, which is a measure of scale-independent structure, and (2) curvedness, which is a measure of scale-dependent structure. Binocular disparity was found to contribute significantly more to judged shape index than it does to judged curvedness, and shad...
متن کاملIntegration Trumps Selection in Object Recognition
Finding and recognizing objects is a fundamental task of vision. Objects can be defined by several "cues" (color, luminance, texture, etc.), and humans can integrate sensory cues to improve detection and recognition [1-3]. Cortical mechanisms fuse information from multiple cues [4], and shape-selective neural mechanisms can display cue invariance by responding to a given shape independent of th...
متن کاملAn Experimental System for the Integration of Information from Stereo and Multiple Shape From Texture Algorithms
In numerous computer vision applications, there is both the need and the ability to access multiple types of information about the thr~ dimensional aspects of objects or surfaces. When this information comes from different sources the combination becomes non-tri .. ;al. This paper describes the present state of ongoing research in Columbia's Vision Laboratory in the integration of multiple visu...
متن کاملShape from texture: ideal observers and human psychophysics.
We describe an ideal observer model for estimating "shape from texture" which is derived from the principles of statistical information. For a given family of surface shapes, measures of statistical information can be computed for two different texture cues--density and orientation of texels. These measures can be used to predict lower bounds on the variance of shape judgements of "ideal" and h...
متن کاملMulti-cue pedestrian recognition
This thesis addresses the problem of detecting complex, deformable objects in an arbitrary, cluttered environment in sequences of video images. Often, no single best technique exists for such a challenging problem, as different approaches possess different characteristics with regard to detection accuracy, processing speed, or the kind of errors made. Therefore, multi-cue approaches are pursued...
